In Europe alone, 30 million mattresses are disposed of every year – 60 percent are landfilled, the rest is burnt. The SOFTY collection is a humorous, yet serious approach to re-use. Simon collects PU mattresses, given away for free on the internet and develops methods to free them from their nasty layer. Wearing gloves and a mask, he first removes the covers, then plucks and filets the surface with his hands. This process, which cleanses the material as well as him, brings out the original beauty of the form, and gives birth to the newborn furniture. The coating with a PU lacquer is flexible yet robust, and creates the final, hygienic top layer.
